> Ever read The Last Psychiatrist, by the way?

Religiously, back in the day. Although the Bukowskian braggadocio kinda got old after a while, and though many good points were made, he(?) did seem a bit too quick to blame everything on "narcissism". I think reality is more... multifactorial. There was one other thing, but it's best discussed 1:1.

> Honestly, what do they have left to conserve nowadays? Take Trump for example

Precisely. In fact, the mantra du jour is, conservatives have conserved nothing. Nor could it have ever been otherwise. "Conservatism" and "classical liberalism" are temporary peacetime ideologies. Against the snarling, determined beast that is the Enemy, they cannot hold. The solution is clearly something different.

Personally, I think Trump is finished. He was provably finished 3 months into his term, as it became obvious he was no Andrew Jackson, no Caesar. Even if they let him "win", he'll just do more of the same, talk tough while letting the enemy walk all over him.

Ever read <a href="https://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2011/08/grade_inflation.html" rel="nofollow">The Last Psychiatrist</a>, by the way?

> Nearly all on both the "left" and "right" (pro-pantsuit and anti-pantsuit?)

Inasmuch as "left" maps to "progressive" and "right" to "conservative" (at least on the particular subject of education), I suppose the last representatives of the right died sometime during the ninenteenth century; although given the phase difference between Romania and Western Europe, Romanians probably knew some conservatives as late as WWII. I for one shall not name them, lest I attract virtue signallers with "extreme right" all over their lips.

Honestly, what do they have left to conserve nowadays? Take Trump for example: in the vehehery improbable case he wins, the most he can do is let the rural folks in power and perhaps try to rebuild from there by employing some form of national socialism. As for Romania, I suppose its post-'90 right died along with Coposu, who at some point must have figured out that our good compatriots don't have any aspirations to be cured of their stupidity. And as far as I can tell this is one of the fundaments of the "right" -- if they don't want it, all the activism in the world ain't gonna convince them.

For what it's worth, I don't think "education" in the sense defined by Ms. Sayers above is impossible. It's merely impossible under the umbrella of any so-called statal authority. By now even Minecraft makes a way better alternative.

Lucian, you complete bast, I was already preparing in my mind all sorts of comments to this piece when I glanced upon the footnotes and the Shamalayanesque twist hit. Ah well, not much use in conversation with an author that has been dead for ages.

I will say, though, that by this time we are already sitting on mountains of evidence as to the complete, utter, perfect, fractal bankruptcy of the Western educational system. Many such as Ms Sayers (the more recent Gatto is also worth reading, as well as Carlin's skits on the topic) have laid out exactly all of the ways in which it is terminally broken, how it became this way, why it became this way, who did it, and, although many tapped out at this point, why it never could have been otherwise.

Granted, the average Joe is still infuriatingly resistant to this information. Nearly all on both the "left" and "right" (pro-pantsuit and anti-pantsuit?) come together when it comes to mindlessly spouting that "more education" is the answer to a lot of problems, especially in Romania. Like bringing in more wolves to "guard" the sheep, or, since the Middle Ages were mentioned, like "treating" your case of syphilis with a nice refreshing swig of mercury. Yikes.

In the end, the real crucial phrase in the article turns out to be "Let us make a clean sweep of all educational authorities". Indeed. I, for one, will be watching with a maximum of Attention and Concern (TM) as to any developments in this particular matter. In Minecraft.
